Understanding The Stages of Hearing Loss

After undergoing an audiometric evaluation, the results are typically presented in an audiogram, which is a chart that visualizes various degrees of hearing loss and combined with subjective and perceptive symptoms of hearing challenges such as word recognition scores which display a patient’s ability to understand speech in competing background noise.
These diagnostic tools help both audiologists and patients understand the extent of a patient’s hearing challenges and its impact on cognitive function. Here are the general categories of hearing loss measured in decibels (dB):

Stage 1

Subclinical Hearing Loss (0 to 15 dB HL)

Individuals can detect sounds across a wide range of frequencies without difficulty. They can hear whispers and soft sounds easily.

Stage 2

Socially Impactful Hearing Loss (16 to 35 dB HL)

People may struggle to hear faint or distant sounds, especially in noisy environments. They may miss some parts of conversations or need to turn up the volume on electronic devices.

Stage 3

Social Distressing Hearing Loss (36 to 65 dB HL)

Significant impact on speech understanding, especially in noisy surroundings. Individuals may require hearing aids to improve communication.

Stage 4

Isolating Hearing Loss (66 to 90 dB HL)

Struggle to hear most conversational speech without amplification. Hearing aids or cochlear implants are often necessary for effective communication.

Stage 5

Complete Hearing Loss (greater than 91 dB HL)

Extremely challenging to hear even loud sounds. Individuals may rely heavily on lip-reading, sign language, or advanced hearing devices for communication.
Understanding the degree of hearing loss is crucial for determining the most appropriate treatment options, such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other assistive devices. Consultation with an audiologist can provide personalized guidance based on individual hearing needs.
