The Overlooked Link Between Kidney Health and Your Hearing

March is National Kidney Month, an important reminder to pay attention to a vital organ that often goes unnoticed until problems become advanced. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects more than 1 in 7 U.S. adults (an estimated 35.5 million Americans) yet as many as 9 in 10 people with CKD are unaware they have it. Early-stage kidney disease typically causes no obvious symptoms, allowing it to progress quietly over time.

For individuals living with diabetes or high blood pressure which is the two leading causes of kidney disease, the risk is even higher. About one in three people with diabetes and one in five people with high blood pressure also have kidney disease. Heart disease and a family history of kidney failure further increase risk. Despite how common CKD is, early detection remains a challenge.

What many people don’t realize is that kidney health and hearing health are closely connected.

How Kidney Disease Can Affect Hearing

Research shows that individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease are more likely to experience sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular (balance) dysfunction. This connection exists because the kidneys and the inner ear share similar microscopic structures and rely on healthy blood flow and cellular function. When systemic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease impact the body, they can affect both organs simultaneously.

In other words, changes in hearing may reflect broader changes happening within the body, especially in individuals already at higher risk for kidney disease.

Could Hearing Screenings Play a Preventive Role?

Because early kidney disease is often symptom-free, this connection raises an important question: could preventive hearing screenings serve as an early signal of broader health concerns?

While a hearing test cannot diagnose kidney disease, identifying changes in hearing, especially when paired with family history or known risk factors, may prompt earlier conversations, monitoring, and collaboration with other healthcare providers. Preventive hearing care can be another valuable layer in a proactive, whole-health approach.
